Artful Ice Shanties
Presented by the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center and Retreat Farm, the Artful Ice Shanties outdoor exhibit is a place-based celebration of artistic talent, creative ingenuity, and the rich history of ice fishing in New England.
The Artful Ice Shanties will be displayed at Retreat Farm from February 15th through February 23rd.
Visitors are welcome to view the shanties from dawn to dusk. Park at Retreat Farm, stop in the Market for a sweet treat, and explore the shanties. Join us for the rest of the festivities throughout the week and make sure to visit Isaac the Ox and our calves Mac and Cortland with their friend Pip on the upper pastures— located up the hill behind the barns.
Artful Ice Shanties ends with an outdoor Awards Ceremony on Saturday, February 22 at 2:00pm. A panel of local makers and fishing enthusiasts will award prizes for notably artistic, inventive, fun, or thought-provoking shanties.
The deadline to register an artful ice shanty for inclusion in the exhibition is Dec.16. Registration forms and details are available at brattleboromuseum.org. There is no fee for entry. Interested parties are encouraged to register soon, as space is limited.
Shanties may be built by individuals or by groups of friends, family members, classmates, work colleagues, or any kind of team. They can be traditional or conceptual, functional or wacky, permanent or temporary, but they must be artful.
